Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company has completed its project to create a 3 MW back-up source of energy supply in Dudinka.

The new source is designed to prevent disruptions at boiler No. 7 in case of power supply emergencies in the capital of Taimyr. Two new gas engines will ensure uninterrupted operation of the local boiler when the need arises, enabling Dudinka’s heat and power provider (part of NTEC) to supply heat to the residents of the town and facilities of Nornickel’s Polar Transport Division under any circumstances.

The project financing (some RUB 400 mln) was provided by Nornickel. Sibirenergoengineering was selected as the general contractor, while Greentech Energy, the official representative of Jenbacher in Russia, was responsible for equipment installation and pre-commissioning.

NTEC underscores the uniqueness of the project, making it particularly reliable in the harsh Arctic climate. For example, gas engines from Jenbacher were selected as the primary source of back-up energy supply for Dudinka’s heat boiler No. 7 because of their reliability and operating efficiency. These power generators meet all the applicable emergency launch and power rating requirements. The power park building houses two container type units with a capacity of 1.5 MW (50 Hz) each. The gas engines boast an improved efficiency factor of up to 44%, an in-built crankcase gas firing system, hi-tech automation tools, an advanced interface for monitoring and managing equipment performance, and an automatic synchronisation system contributing to smooth load distribution. Automated equipment launch is yet another distinctive feature of this project. Experts believe that combination of these factors is the secret behind the remarkable performance of the new energy source.

Temperatures in the power park building are maintained within the positive range, with service fluids in the gas engines constantly warmed up. This helps launch the system within the shortest possible time when the need be. On top of that, the power park building has a diesel generator, which in case of an in-house blackout can restore the required voltage to restart the system within 20 seconds.
