Investments in the Nadezhda Smelter, including the implementation of the Sulfur Program, underscore Nornickel’s commitment to sustainable development and technological leadership.

The Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant (NMP), a key enterprise in Nornickel’s Norilsk division, is undergoing extensive upgrade and repair program. Known for its advanced technologies and significant role in processing nickel and copper raw materials, the plant is a central element in the company’s strategy for business modernization and environmental improvement. Significant investments in the plant include the upgrade of production lines and the flagship environmental project, the Sulfur Program, intended to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions and improve the environmental situation in Norilsk.

The current stage of NMP’s upgrade involves the replacement of the flash smelting furnace and peripheral equipment. The use of modern mechanisms, such as demolition robots and spider cranes, significantly enhances the efficiency and safety of the production process.

Vitaly Dovgal, General Director of Norilsk Nickel Repair, commented: “Previously, we used jackhammers, but now we use demolition robots. There are 15 units of such equipment in operation. The main advantage of the robot is that it can be sent into dangerous areas where people cannot work, such as areas with high temper atures or the risk of structural collapse. The operator can monitor the work from a safe distance of 100-150 meters using a radio signal.”

**The demolition robot dismantles the furnace base at NMP**

The demolition robot’s hydraulic hammer has a power of 1,500 joules, which significantly exceeds the capabilities of traditional jackhammers. As a result, one robot can perform the work that previously required up to 30 people. In addition to robots, spider cranes are used at the plant. These cranes can move across hard-to-reach areas and lift loads weighing up to 17 tons. Plasma cutters are employed to cut metal structures, effectively handling metal up to 200 mm thick.

Daily, 1,600 specialists are involved in the repair work, with the maximum workforce expected to reach 3,200 people. The primary goal is to complete the extensive repairs without any injuries and within the set timeframe.

After the reconstruction is completed, the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant will increase production volumes, strengthen Nornickel’s market position, and allow the company to remain a leader in the industry. The plant employs about 2,500 people, and this modernization contributes not only to technological progress but also to the improvement of working conditions and safety.
