Nornickel’s Trans-Baikal division, Bystra, has added a new functionality to its intelligent video analytics system. Computer vision now makes sure that those working at height are tethered with safety slings.

The use of a safety harness when working at height is one of the six cardinal safety rules of Nornickel, designed to reduce accidents.

Developed by Nornickel’s IT team, the new solution is powered by machine vision and artificial intelligence. It detects if a worker is not wearing a safety harness or if a safety sling is not fastened. Digital control is needed to protect the company’s employees from injuries and improve overall safety in the company.

Evgeny Paramonov, Leading Specialist of Occupational Health and Safety Department at Bystra, commented: “The new functionality helps to quickly respond to and prevent violations, reducing the risk of injuries and accidents at work. Working at height is a high risk, so it requires special attention and control. The developers approached the task responsibly and professionally, and provided the customer with a ready-made solution in the shortest possible time.”

Nornickel’s specialists plan to replicate the new development to other divisions and production sites in the future.
